Introduction to Bedding Mattress

Choosing the right bedding mattress can be tricky. There are many different styles, designs and brands available. Luckily for you, we're hear to give you a helping hand...

What Mattresses Are Out There?

The market for bed mattresses is huge. The best way to begin looking into mattresses is to break them down into categories such as type, size or design. Here are just a few examples:

Mattress Type

-Foam Mattress
-Bedding Mattress
-Memory Foam Mattress
-Air Mattress
-Water Mattress
-Mattress Topper

Mattress Size

-King Mattress
-Double Mattress
-Grande Mattress
-Memory Foam Mattress Single

Mattress Design

-Futon Mattress
-Spring Mattress
-Comfort Mattress
-Firm Mattress
-Soft Mattress

As you can see...quite a large selection. So the first thing to do before you go out buying a mattress, is to pick a type, size and design. That way you are more likely to find exactly what you are looking for, and not come home disappointed.

If you are looking to totally change your current bed and mattress for something newer and a bit more up market, some manufacturers like Tempurpedic offer a tempur bed, where you buy a mattress and get the absolute correct bed frame to support it. They did make it after all. This is really the way to go if you want to ensure you're getting the best quality.

Specialist Mattresses

Going Out To Buy A Mattress

By now you will have chosen a type, size and design of bedding mattress, and are ready to go out looking, and potentially buy one.

When you walk into the shop, don't be overwhelmed by the amount of mattresses around...these display models are there to test, and for impulse buys from individuals who have not done their homework previously.

Walk up the store assistant and explain what you are looking for, and then asked to be shown what they have in stock. If they are good they will take you straight there and not try to blindside you with something else.

So there it is infront of you...a mattress you might be taking home. Explore every detail.

-Does it look right?
-Does it smell ok?
-Can you picture it in your bedroom?

The most important thing to do here is (and we can't stress this enough) CLIMB ON. You must always TRY BEFORE YOU BUY.

The amount of people that get a mattress home only to find it's not the right one is unbelievable. If the assistant says you can't get on, give him an earfull or walk out. Afterall, they aren't the ones who will be using it! When you're on there don't just lay back and relax the whole time. Remember when you were a kid and jumped up and down on your bed? Do that a bit, just not as obviously...this will test if the mattress is the right build quality for you. Some other things to be aware of are:

-Is it comfy?
-Does it provide you with enough support?
-Is it the right size? (Hopefully, but if your feet stick off the end go for the next size up)

So if you buy the mattress there and then, make sure you get a good price...and make sure you get at least a 5 year guarentee. Some manufacturers will even give you a lifetime guarentee!

Alternatively, you could do the above and find the exact mattress you want and then go home and look online for some cheaper deals. It's common for online retailers to do great deals on bedding mattresses and pillows, much cheaper than stores. A great place to start looking is Amazon.com

Getting Your Mattress Home

If the store is good, you'll probably get a free home delivery, or at least discounted. Don't let the store push you around here...tell them you want it delivered exactly when you want it delivered. Got a busy schedule? Well ask them to hang on to it for a few days. If they turn round and say they can deliver it on the day, even better!

Your bedding mattress should be delivered in a protective box or plastic sheet. If it's not, ask why. You havn't spend all that money only for it to be wrecked in a delivery van. Furthermore, check the mattress before you accept it. If it has any marking or damage at all...reject it! Phone the store and ask for a replacement to be sent immediately. You're not here to buy sub standard goods afterall.

Put the mattress on your (new) bed and make sure it fits ok. Climb aboard again just to make sure. Hopefully it will be 100% perfect and there will be no problems...but if there are better to find them earlier than later!

The final thing to do is to dress the mattress, and fall asleep on it. Relaxation to the max. Maybe you could even purchase some relaxing music
to aid your restful sleep.

Memory Foam Mattresses

Simmons Beautyrest Mattress

A Simmons Beautyrest mattress is possibly the best known brand in the country, if not the entire world. But Simmons is a world class mattress manufacturer, so is the Beautyrest the best one they make, or is there a better choice? We will look at a few of the facts, and try to help make that question a little clearer.

Where many lines of mattresses are made of only one type, the Beautyrest mattress collection is made of four separate mattress types, beginning with a traditional innerspring, and progressing through pocket coils and memory foam to the highest level, which is a blend of memory foam and pocket coil springs. This is an edge for marketing purposes, can be somewhat confusing to ordinary folks looking for a new mattress, and without any informational background to draw from.

The most basic mattress in the collection is the Beautyrest Classic mattress, which is the most traditional of the collection. It uses innersprings composed of tempered steel, and is one of the most supportive of the Beautyrest mattresses. For frugal shoppers, this is probably going to be the most economical mattress in the whole collection, but don't take that to mean this is a cheaply made mattress, it is merely priced economically.

The Beautyrest World Class provides exceptional support, and high quality memory foam construction. Where many memory foam mattresses retain excess body heat, the patented mattress top of a the World Class line allows air flow under the body to transport body heat away from you before it can make your sleep uncomfortable.

Third in the Beautyrest collection is the Beautyrest Exceptionale, which uses a unique double layer of pocket coil springs to give you a balance between plushness and superior orthopedic support. Pocket coil spring are better able to mold to the natural contours of the body, providing added support in area that need it, and generally allowing better spinal alignment than you can get with many other similar mattresses.

The newest and last item in the Beautyrest mattress collection is a memory foam using a proprietary viscoelastic foam, and is known as the Beautyrest NxG mattress. By using a special vacuum sealed manufacturing process, the NxG foam is better able to conduct heat away from the body than ordinary memory foam, and many picky sleepers consider it to be the best mattress available.

Hopefully, you now understand why it is difficult to pinpoint a particular Simmons Beautyrest mattress to be the best. Each model, from the Classic to the NxG memory foam, is designed to fill a special mattress niche, and give Simmons' customers a broad choice of exceptional sleep surfaces. Beautyrest is, indeed, the flagship mattress line from Simmons, and with so many choices available, it's fairly easy to understand how that came to be.

Visco Mattress

A visco memory foam mattress gets it's name from the visco-elastic material developed for NASA in the early 1970's in conjunction with the space program.

The astronauts in the space program were facing incredible g-forces, at take-off and re-entry, and the materials that were available, at that time, weren't sufficient to cushion their bodies.

Of course, they weren't looking for a memory foam mattress, they needed seating that was more like a big, overstuffed recliner.

Visco memory foam was developed from foam that had some unique characteristics, such as being open celled and able to return to their original shape and resiliency after being compressed.

You may have seen the commercial with the 30 ton steam roller smashing a mattress flat and how it slowly returns to it's exact original shape...or maybe you're more familiar with the picture of a hand above a mattress with the hand print still showing on it.

Both illustrations are meant to show you the slow recovery of visco memory foam.

Because the billions of cells, in a visco memory foam mattress, are open, air can slowly escape from them and pass into other cells that are adjacent.

As you lie on a visco memory foam mattress, it "melts away" from you until your body is completely and evenly supported over it's entire surface.

That's what has been termed by some as feeling like you're floating in space. (Even though I love my mattress, I've never felt like that was a good explanation of how it feels)

A visco memory foam mattress is temperature sensitive, so it reacts to your body temperature by softening where your body is in contact with the mattress.

If you have an injury, with a fever, the mattress is softer under that place on your body.

In the beginning developments of this material, it was too expensive to be used for residential consumer mattresses and pillows.

Over time, the manufacturing costs have been whittled to a point that a good memory foam mattress is as reasonably priced as a good innerspring mattress and there is no comparison in the comfort of the two.

Memory foam is now being combined with other materials to meet the needs of the vast multitude of consumers who are looking for:

a better night's sleep

relief from back, neck or leg pain

relief from a partner's restless movement

better circulation

a compromise to a softer feel for one person while maintaining the support the other person is used to from a firm mattress

Schedule some time to do some memory foam mattress pricing comparisons and you'll see that you can, affordably, be sleeping on a mattress that is great for your body, health and your budget.
